For a short term solution to stop global warming we need to work on conserving energy and educating people who are ignorant to the effects of global warming. As a long term goal alternate solutions of energy could be found that will have a less harmful effective on the enviroment.

I am taking a different approach to this question. I will give certain ways that I can prevent global warming related to my field of study and others outside of my field of study. As I study exercise science the more and more efficient my body becomes. A large part of global warming and the raising temperature is due to carbon dioxide in atmosphere. As a future health proffessonal I can encourage cycing, walking, and jogging as a alternative to driving a car which raises the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Public transportation or even car pooling is a second option to decrease the levels of carbon dioxie caused by automobiles. Second way to decrease the amount of global warming occurence is "prevention". The public needs to be aware of beggining signs of global warming. A few of these signs are droughts, fires, major population changes. All of these symptoms of gobal warming can be prevented by an early introduction of beggining signs of global warming.
Walt Dearborn PHYS 211.005
Recycling would obviously be the best short term goal. We need to recycle anything from paper to bottles to cans. It would cut down on the amount of trash we produce and the bottles, cans, and paper can be reused. Another good short term goal to help global warming would be to carpool with one another or walk to where we need to go. If two people are going to the exact same place, then it only makes sense to carpool to save on the amount of gas and pollutants in the air. If the place where one is going to within walking distance, then walk to it. It will not only cut down on pollution in the air, but also, it will make each of us healthier. Turning off appliances and cutting down on water usage would also be a great short term goal to help conserve energy.
A few long term goals would include; electric cars, eliminating areosal can usage, and having more public transportation. Using electric cars would help keep pollution out of the air we breathe and cut down on gas prices altogether. Areosal cans release a lot of chemicals into the air we breathe. It we stop using them, our air will be much healthier to breathe. Having more public transportation is a big plus because there would be less amount of cars and other motor vehicles on the road, which will ultimately cut down on the amount of pollution in the air. This would have to be a very long term goal, but it would still help to make the earth a lot healthier.
Lastly, I think everyone should plant a tree. If everyone plants just one tree, the tress will be able to use the carbon dioxide we release into the air. Also, the trees will produce more oxygen for us to breathe and make the earth a much nicer place.

There are various short and long term solutions that could help reduce the harmful effects of global warming. First it is important for us as a population to start conserving energy and using renewable energy, such as solar energy or wind. The use of renewable energy would reduce the release of carbon dioxide into the environment, which is the leading cause of global warming. Also, it would be necessary to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide from cars. This goal can be reached by automotive industries, which would have to work on making more fuel efficient cars, as well as consumers, which would have to consider the fuel economy when purchasing their vehicles. Other short term solutions would be to recycle. This would save the energy that is required to make new products. Using the most energy efficient home appliances is also important. It would also help to increase the amount of gases we take out of the atmosphere. This could be done by planting trees and increasing forests, which would help absorb the carbon dioxide. Long term solutions to global warming would be to invest in research and to continue doing what we can to help by educating our nation about this problem.
Michael Clark - Phys 211.003
There are many methods, both short term and long term that we as a population can utilize to conserve our energy and fuel supplies and thus reduce the emission of harmful greenhouse gasses into our atmosphere. First and foremost we can start in our homes with the appliances we use everyday by upgrading to energy efficient models. The Government has even began to offer incentives to individuals whom operate appliances in their homes that are designed to operate without consuming excessive levels of electricity. Outside of our homes we can look for other modes of transportation such as hybrid vehicles, bio-diesel vehicles, fully electric vehicles or go simple by walking or biking to destinations that are within reasonable distance. These are all short term actions that can be taken immediately but much can be done for the long term as well. We can invest our time, energy and funding in research that will develop cleaner energy sources. Solar and wind are two sources of energy that are clearly abundant on our planet and with some time we as a people could utilize these resources. Steam is also an energy source we can tap into as it travels at an extreme velocity when properly contained and can turn powerful turbines that will in turn produce electricity.
One interesting thing for me is that not many people address the other greenhouse gasses that are even more so harmful than Carbon Dioxide. In the United States we have a large beef industry and in turn many cattle that release a tremendous amount of methane gas into the atmosphere. Methane is far more efficient at trapping heat than Carbon Dioxide yet no one seems to address this issue. To fully tackle the problem of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we must approach the problem from all angles, including those that may lead to cow butts!
Devin Kirby-Phys 211.003
For short term solutions we could conserve energy and fuel, along with educating people unaware of global warmings effects. energy saving products such as more effective lightbulbs and even just turning off appliances in your home when they are not being used. For a long term solution a new energy source could be found such as solar, wind, biofuels and so on. One specific change which could be the miles to the gallon on vechicals especially in this country could be raised.

Solutions:
There are many different ways that we can address the issue of climate change and help to slow the process of global warming. First of all, cooling a house during the summer time can use up a lot of energy. Instead of relying entirely on air conditioning, we can utilize things such as ceiling fans and shading to help cool down our houses. Also, cooking with a microwave, or outside on a barbecue, generates less interior heat than cooking with an oven or stove. A long term solution woulod be to plant trees. Trees help to absorb carbon dioxide, leaving less of this gas floating around in our atmosphere.
Bethany Link- PHYS 211.003 Dr. Vera Smolyaninova
Solutions:
Some short term solutions to reduce global warming would be to recycle of course. Another one would be to use more environmentally friendly household products like lightbulbs. We could reduce the number of plastic bottles being used by switching to nalgene bottles. We could help save the environment using these and also save some money in our pockets by not buying new water bottles daily. Another short term goal would be to bring your own tote bag to the store and not use their plastic bags. This way you are not throwing plastic bags accidently into the trash instead of recycling them. Some long term goals would be turning places like our homes and the TU campus into more environmentally friendly buildings. We could use solar panels (although it will be expensive but think of the money you would be saving in the long run) to run our buildings and homes. Another long term goal would be to buy an energy efficient car like the hybrid to reduce air pollution. Some other goals would be to drive together with friends when you all go out. This will reduce the CO2 emmissions in the air and save you some gas money.
Joseph DiBlasi - PHYS 211.004 and Long Hoang - PHYS 211.003
Solutions:
Some short term solutions to help reduce global warming is to recycle household waste. This easy and simple decision will save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year by just recycling half of a house holds waste. A short term solution for transportation which would reduce consumption of fuel would be to car pool and use public transportation. Another short term solution that would save more than 70% of energy is to cover your pots while cooking. Long term solutions would include energy efficient appliances for all of your basic needs (washers, dryers, and dishwashers). By doing so, people will not only save a lot of money but if many people replace their energy wasting appliances with better ones, a significant amount of energy will be saved. Another long term solution is to buy a fuel efficient car such as a hybrid. Typically hybrids get 60 gallons to a mile unlike older cars which may only get up to 20. This big of a ratio will equate to much less consumption on gas. Finally, a long term solution which many people who have two legs and two arms can do is plant a tree. If more people can plant trees, this will be a big advantage to our environment. Just one tree can consume one ton of carbon dioxide over its life time.
Gretchen Melvin-PHYS 211.004
Obviously there are many different approaches you can make to help with the issue of global warming. For me, I plan to turn off all electrical appliances when I leave a room. This short term goal will make me more aware of things such as: leaving the light on, leaving the heater on automatic when I can just turn it on only when I am cold, etc. Also, by driving my car less frequently I will eliminate the amount of heat-trapping gases I emit into the air. For my long term goal, I plan on using for Energy Star products. These energy saving appliances will be worth the extra cost because I will send less pollutants into the air.
Kristina Furrow-PHYS 211.004
There are many ways to help with the problem of global warming. There are both long term and short term solutions to decrease the occurence of global warming. Some of the short term ideas that I have for myself would be to recycle all of my plastic bottles and paper products and use my vehicle less often than I have been using it. If I am able to walk somewhere that is just a few streets away than I will save my gas and decrease the amount of pollutant being dispersed into the air. Possibly in the future I will be interested in purchasing a hybrid car to help with the decrease of air pollutant. Hopefully in the future there will be less regular vehicles and an abundance of hybrids. Other ways that can help with the problem of global warming would be to use more energy efficient appliances and light bulbs in my home.

Global warming is one of the biggest concerns we have to deal with today. The main source of pollution contributing to global warming is the use of the automobile. The ideal way to fix this problem would be an alternative fuel source, which does not put so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Since there is no alternative fuel source yet, hybrid cars are a good way to cut back on the pollution by making a car go further on one tank of gas. Another way to help with global warming is by using less energy. We need to start using more natural sources of energy, like sunlight or wind. These ways of harnessing energy are very efficient but only 1% of the energy produced in the US is done with these methods. More Midwestern states that have the space need to begin utilizing these methods, then maybe it will catch on in more places.
Solutions
Several things can be done to help try to reduce the effects of global warming. One long term solution would be to use less carbon dioxide over a person’s life span. This can be done by using energy efficient light bulbs and unplugging appliances that are not in use. Another long term solution could be to try to reduce the amount of CO2 gas emitted by cars, planes, and other forms of transportation. This can be done by making more hybrid automobiles (especially those designed for mass transit). Short term goals would be to try to have people do more carpooling so the actual numbers of cars on the road will be reduced, thus producing fewer harmful gases. Another short term solution would be to stop throwing away so much trash; instead we should try to recycle as much as possible. When we go to the grocery store it might be a good idea to just take your own bags, so we are not using the plastic bags the cashier gives us. Often times these bags are not recycled and they just produce more trash. Another long term goal would be to convert to using more alternative fueling methods such as wind or solar power and putting bio-diesel in our cars. This is just another way to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is produced. The final short term goal should be to try to educate people on the potential effects of global warming and ways they can try to reduce its effects. Hopefully this will allow people to make better decisions on how they can save the Earth.
Amy Morlock-PHYS 211.003 Dr. Vera Smolyaninova
Solutions:
A short term goal would be to educate people about global warming. Part of the ongoing problem is people are just ignorant to the facts about the serious dangers of global warming and are unaware of the many different ways they could help. If we could share and pass on our knowledge to just a few people and that process continued, it would be a start to taking control of global warming. Paper producing is one of the most energy utilizing and polluting maunfacturing industries. A long term goal to reduce global warming is to do your shopping online and call the companies that send you their catalogs and have them take you off their mailing list.
Sara Lagler- Phys 211.004- Dr. Vera Smolyaninova
Solutions:
There's no denying that humans have definately played a part in global warming. The United States uses the most amount of fossil fuels (which emits CO2 and causes the Greenhouse effect), and although we are currently the worst when it comes to being environmentally friendly, this puts us in place to be able to cut down the most on these gas emissions. If each person changed a few things about their daily routine, we could cut down greatly on the effects of global warming. For instance, some short term solutions could be planning our errands and car use before we leave the house, in order to pick the most direct route to and from the places we need to go. Also, when going shopping, it would be much better to use reusable bags instead of the convenient plastic ones, which usually end up being thrown away. It would also be very beneficial to continue recycling, and try to get more people to do it. If the government offered some kind of incentive program for people who recycle, that might help get more people involved. Some long term soultions would be to come up with a type of energy that does not involve fossil fuels. For instance, switching all cars over to hybrids, or another type of efficient, environment-friendly energy in the future.
Jengo Musa- Phys 211.003 Dr. Vera Smolyaninova
Solutions:
There are many ways one can a make a difference when it comes to global warming. A short term goal would be to make small changes in my home. I could replace the conventional bulbs in my most frequently used light fixtures with bulbs that have the energy star on them. This helps the enviornment and saves money on the electric bill. I could also urge my family yo use the recycling program in my neighborhood by recycling our newspapers, cans, bottles, and plastic containers. Another change I could make in my house is to keep the thermostat setting in my home at 72 degrees, and also keep the setting on automatic so it doesn't come on continuosly but at intervals. A longterm goal would be to get my neighbors involved. Educate them on how little changes in the products they buy could have a big impact. The ultimate goal would be to have all the households on my street to use more Energy star products and to use the recycling program in our community if they don't already.
Karen O'Neil- PHYS 211.003 Dr. Vera Smolyaninova
Solutions:
I have learned of many ways in which we can make a difference and try to reverse the effects of the current global warning situation. Obviously, short-term goals are usually the easiest and cheapest to accomplish. For instance, at my apartment my roommate and I have begun to use the Energy Smart lightbulbs. They last for a much longer time and use less CO2 that is harming the environment. We have also begun using only paper bags at the grocery store, and have cut back on how many paper towels, plastic utensils, and bottled waters we use. If we have to use bottled water and try and save the bottle to reuse it as much as possible. We try and keep paper and plastic separate when we are done using them, so that we are able to put them out for recycling each week. Another long term goal, that will most likely be much more attainable in the near future, is driving a hybrid car. They are much more energy efficient and with their increasing popularity, more models and type will most likely be available soon. Also, saving more natural landscape around our area instead of tearing the trees down to build more homes or offices can also help curb the effects of global warming as well. A final long-term goal could be to have offices have mandatory recycling stations, so that all those boxes, office paper, etc will not be thrown into the trash.

An easy short term solution to help combat global warming is to remember the three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce your use of electricity by powering off all electronics when not in use and replacing standard light bulbs with energy star bulbs. According to Jim Meyerle of Urban Options in Lansing, Michigan, if every household in the state of Michigan replaced just one standard light bulb with an energy star bulb, enough energy would be saved to light the city of Lansing for one year. Imagine what we could do as a nation if every house replaced at least one bulb, and better yet every bulb (especially those that remain on for extended periods of time like the front porch or living/family room). Also, be sure to turn off the water when it is not actively being used; i.e. while brushing your teeth, scrub dishes first then turn water on to rinse, etc. Purchase reusable products, such as bags for shopping and water bottles. Check with your local waste removal company or recycling center for a list of recyclable materials and start recycling.
Not to sound redundant, but solar energy will always be a viable source of energy. There could also be en economic benefit if the government (either federal, state, or a combination) were to provide grant assistance for low- and middle-income families to install solar paneling on their homes. I have personally seen a two-person family home using a small solar panel actually reverse the direction of their electric meter; they were actually providing electricity to the power company. Legislation could be enacted to force electric companies to pay consumers for the electricity that is supplied to the power plant, even if by adding a credit to the bill – say a “solar credit.” Biofuels are another long-term solution in that they reduce the greenhouse gases that are emitted when using standard petrol fuel.
One last idea that could potentially reduce the effects of global warming, while saving money, is to initiate a composting/vermicomposting program. If Towson University were to institute such a program, it could potentially use the soil produced to organically grow fresh produce for the dining halls and cafes on campus. If the University were able to grow its own produce, it would save money on food costs and would also help the environment by reducing the amount of emissions in the atmosphere since the produce would not need to be transported to campus. Even though composting on a large scale could potentially release methane and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere, these gases could be captured – if the composting system is designed to do such – and used for various other purposes, like methane-powered vehicles.

One of the ways that we can reduce our impact on global warming in the United States is to greatly reduce or eliminate the sale of bottled water and instead rely on tap water. The tap water in the United States is some of the "safest", "most regulated", and "good-tasting" water in the world. According to research Americans buy about 28 billion water bottles a year and 80% end up in landfills. This is alarming since this problem of over-crowding landfills could greatly reduced by recycling the bottles. Unlike tap water, bottled water "uses up oil and other fossil fuels to be produced and shipped". Bottled water also uses up fossil fuels in its production. The Pacific Institutes calculates that the United states uses approximately 17 million barrels of oil per year in order to satisfy its demand for bottled water. By uses tap water instead of bottled water every individual could make an impact on the environment. This is a great short-term goal that every person can participate in and is easily implementable in daily life.

Goals: As a short term goal, i would say education. Many people are not truly aware about global warming and how its slowly affecting us and will cause great harm if not stopped. Without education many people wont know what to do to help reduce or stop global warming. As a long term goal people must first start doing little things which will then make a huge difference collectively and will even help save extra money in their pockets. the huge amounts of gas usage in america plays a big role in global warming. people can carpool, take the train or bus, walk and even ride bikes to the places they need to be. this will also help them stay in shape, save money and prevent global warming all at the same time. another thing that will help is turning off lights where they are not need and unpluging things like computers, tv, cell phone charges, lamps and anything that use up energy when they are not needed. there are many little things that we can do that wont put a strain in our lives that can save us money and help save the world.
Several things can be done to help try to reduce the effects of global warming. One long term solution would be to use less carbon dioxide over a person’s life span. There are many ways that we can contribute in order to try to limit global warming. For example, many people are buying and driving hybrid cars. These cars use much less gasoline and have much less emissions, that polute our atmosphere, and increase the "greenhouse effect." People should try to use public transportation more often and carpool as often as possible. Also people should participate in more recyling, and enforce recycling laws, to re-use our resources, such as paper. This would limit factory polution, as well as saving forests and many other natural resources. Another thing we can do is try to find other forms of renewable energy. People should also dedicate time to community service, such as cleaning and planting more plants (such as trees). These are just some simple things that can be done to reduce the "greenhouse" effect and clean up the evironment.

Last winter I had the privilege of attending Al Gores presentation, An Inconvenient Truth, at a local community college near my home in Connecticut. Throughout the hour lecture, many topics were discussed pertaining to the chronic cause of global warming, current affects society has on the pace of warming, the concerns this phenomenon raises and its effect, and potential short term and long term solutions to this continuing crisis. Two of the short term solutions regarding the increased core temperature of Earth that had the greatest effect on my outlook were CO2 emissions by an individual and as a nation and lack of global awareness on such a decisive issue. Every individual on this planet can be part of the solution or the problem when they arise each morning and I believe if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem. As an element of my short term plan, I believe we, as a world wide alliance, should make an effort to lower our daily CO2 emission. This can include using public transportation, switching to flex fuel or solar powered vehicles rather than gasoline, discontinuing the use of aerosol cans, or even investing in energy renewal (wind, solar, geothermal, bioenergy) or energy efficiency products. By reducing the amount of CO2 used, the infra-red rays will be able to escape our atmosphere rather than remain trapped in a force-field of gas, which will in turn begin to cool our environment. Also, I strongly believe a tactic as simple as increasing global awareness on our crisis will help educate those of all hemispheres that will experience the consequences if actions are not taken immediately. Some may turn their shoulder to all the hype, but even those giving a cold shoulder can make an effort to create a healthier environment and prolong our sustainable resources.

In addition to these two recommended short term solutions, I will provide one long term solution that should be implemented to limit the consequences of the global warming emergency. I believe that as a nation, the United States of America should invest, as a government and as a public, in carbon neutral companies as well as companies striving to become part of the solution. This can include companies designed to scientifically research the laws of thermodynamics, alternate energy resources and production, and the convection energy conversion cycle. Even if global warming turns out to be another elevated temperature in our worlds history, because some scientist argue that if we look at our world on a time-line, we are currently in a period experiencing some if its coldest weather (behind the ice ages of course), these investments will provide a healthier environment and decrease our demand for oil. As a bonus, a limited need for oil will boost our economy and repair that hole in most of our college commuter’s pockets.
